Clowders Book Tour: Book Review

Clowders
by Vanessa Morgan
Genre: Horror, Suspense

Synopsis

Clervaux, Luxembourg. This secluded, picturesque town in the middle of Europe is home to more cats than people. For years, tourists have flocked to this place – also known as “cat haven” – to meet the cats and buy cat-related souvenirs.

When Aidan Burns, Jess Burns and their five-year-old daughter, Eleonore, move from America to Clervaux, it seems as if they’ve arrived in paradise. It soon becomes evident, though, that the inhabitants’ adoration of their cats is unhealthy. According to a local legend, each time a cat dies, nine human lives are taken as a punishment. To tourists, these tales are supernatural folklore, created to frighten children on cold winter nights. But for the inhabitants of Clervaux, the danger is horrifyingly real.

Initially, Aidan and Jess regard this as local superstition, but when Jess runs over a cat after a night on the town, people start dying, one by one, and each time it happens, a clowder of cats can be seen roaming the premises.

Are they falling victim to the collective paranoia infecting the entire town? Or is something unspeakably evil waiting for them?

Their move to Europe may just have been the worst decision they ever made.

Review

When I read the synopsis of this book I thought I would absolutely enjoy reading Clowders. But now that I have finished reading Clowders I feel that my expectations had not being met satisfactorily, though I agree I had quite a high amount of expectations. Anyways jumping straight to the review, first I would talk about the good points then I would let you on to why this book kind of disappointed me.

First thing that I loved about the book were the two characters Jess and Eleonore. Jess’ character was especially very good. She was a very good wife and even better mother. She was in inner turmoil and mental pain many times but still she managed to put a happy face and managed to enjoy, only for the sake of her daughter. Eleonore’s character was quite good too, she was a very sweet girl.

The whole book was filled with suspense and there were quite a few horrifying and scary scenes in the book, especially the climax was very scary. The last four deaths happened one after another therefore, the last 10% or so was really terrifying.

Now coming to the things, that rendered this book not quite satisfying. There are two things that I didn’t like about the book. The first one was Aidan’s character. He was just not likeable, I know there are people like him out there and maybe I don’t have the right to judge someone, but I just didn’t like his character. The other thing, and my biggest bummer was the infidelity subplot, it was present for most part of the book, and it kind of shifted away the focus from the main plot. So some of the scary scenes somehow lost it’s intensity as my focus was elsewhere. This infidelity plot just proved to be quite annoying, because sometimes I was more interested to know whether he would cheat or not rather than been interested in who is the ghost or if the family would make it alive.

Even though there were a few things that I didn’t like about this book, but still it was a good read, and succeeded to keep my interest riveted to it because of the suspense making it quite a page turner.

Final words

If you are in mood for a horror story in a small town setting, then this book is definitely recommend for you.

SYNOPSIS

For two FBI agents with a past, love becomes a matter of life and death in the new Hidden Sins novel from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Katee Robert.

Maggie Gaines used to be an FBI agent—top of her class and one of the bright, up-and-coming stars—until she spectacularly fell apart during her first high-profile case. That was eight years ago. Now she’s a ranger at Glacier National Park, and she’s found some measure of peace. But when the body of a murdered woman is discovered, she must finally put the past behind her and work with the one man she thought she’d never see again.

For months, Vic Sutherland has been hunting a killer who’s been targeting unsuspecting hikers in national parks—and now the predator has come to Glacier. Vic knows the case will bring him face-to-face with his former partner, yet nothing can prepare him for seeing Maggie again after all these years, or for the memories of passion it stirs in both of them.

As the investigation brings them closer together—and closer to the killer—Maggie and Vic fear they have only each other to trust. But even that might not be enough to make it out of Glacier alive.

REVIEW

The Hunting Grounds is filled with suspense and the plot pulls you into the story right from the beginning.

The Hunting Grounds is told through three point of views that is Vic, Maggie and Madison.  Maggie is a strong, brave and determined park ranger who doesn’t fear risking her life to save someone. Her character was my favourite character from this book. It was a very well built character. And then the next person I would like to talk about is Vic, his character was also good. Like Maggie he is also brave and strong. Along with that he has an awesome ability to remain calm in most situations and he is somewhat a control freak too, but not in a bad way though. Madison’s part was short, and mostly told to convey the past and what might have caused the crime.

The romance between Maggie and Vic made up only a small part of the plot but still it was beautiful and it was just the perfect dose of romance that this novel needed.

This novel was filled with suspense and lot of unpredictable twists and turns. The plot kept me at the edge of my sit until the criminal got caught. The mystery was so gripping that it was very difficult to stop reading the book.

I loved The Hunting Grounds and I guess it is my best mystery read of this year till date. I would definitely like to recommend this book to all the suspense lovers.

Vic’s gaze fell on his phone. Maggie’s number was now in the contacts folder. It would be easy to dial it, just to check on her.

Except it was late, and she hadn’t asked for him to babysit her.

He’d gone years without seeing her, and now that they were in the same general area, it was like they were two magnets that could barely resist the pull. He wanted to hear her voice, to sit her down and share a meal that wasn’t military issue, to actually talk.

His phone rang, which startled him so much he almost dropped it. Vic stared at the screen for several precious seconds, wondering if he was more tired than he’d thought, because it sure as fuck looked like Maggie was calling him. “Sutherland.”

“It’s me.”

He sat on the edge of the bed, suddenly painfully aware that he wore only a towel. It shouldn’t matter. She couldn’t see him, didn’t know what he was or wasn’t wearing, but it did matter. “Hey, Maggie.”

“I have to apologize.” He could almost feel her soft sigh. “You were right, and I was acting like a stubborn kid. This whole thing—the murders in the park and having to deal with my past and you—has got me all twisted up.”

Maybe it was the events of the last two days, but he was so goddamn tired of doing the noble thing. He never put himself or his personal shit before a case. Not once.

He’d never wanted to before.

“I twist you up?”

“As if you didn’t know. I had something of a crush on you when we were partners—which I’m sure you knew after I threw myself at you—and apparently I didn’t outgrow it as much as I thought.”

The dimness of the room evoked an intimacy he didn’t deserve. Was Maggie sitting in her bedroom in low light, too? He liked the picture that made. “You have nothing to apologize for.”

“I’ve been making an ass of myself since you stepped off that helicopter.” She shifted, the sound painfully loud in the near silence. “And I’m doing it again, apparently. My whole point was that I’m sorry and I’ll be professional from now on. You don’t have to worry about any breakdowns or hissy fits.”

If he was smart, he’d take her apology for what it was and allow it to move them back to solid ground. There were lives on the line and a condensed timeline that was only going to get more condensed with each body that popped up.

But when Vic spoke, he didn’t move them back to firm ground. He threw them right over the edge of the cliff. “Fuck being professional. I want you, Maggie. Not the former FBI agent. Not the park ranger. I want you.”

Praise for The Hidden Sins Series

…a captivating read, made all the more rewarding when good triumphs.” —Washington Post

Robert shows off her impressive versatility in this fast-paced and inventive new Hidden Sins series. The small-town setting is a masterful blend of quaint and oppressive, which ratchets the menace and thrill factor. The protagonists carry the full weight of their pasts with them, making their growing relationship as compelling as the mystery element in The Devil’s Daughter. With plenty of twists and betrayals, this is a book that is sure to earn Robert a wealth of new fans.” —RT Book Reviews

Katee Robert has definitely picked up the romantic suspense genre and made it her bitch. I can’t wait to see what we get next. Given some of the books I see she’s been using for research, I know it’s going to be frightening and amazing at the same time.”—Goodreads Review

The To do list: Book Review

THE TO-DO LIST

By Sharon Struth

Genres: romance, suspense

SYNOPSIS

Maggie Harris has her ultra-organized life well in hand, until she finds her neighbor and husband together, in her bed, and the tight hold she keeps on her world unravels, leaving her grasping for an escape. So how can she refuse when she’s handed the dream job of running her aunt’s bookstore and a chance for a fresh start? Even though the bookstore is in Brockport, Connecticut, her former hometown, and a place she’d vowed to leave behind forever.

When someone breaks into Maggie’s new business and leaves a threat on the wall, Detective Cooper Stanton is assigned the case. It’s been twenty years, but Coop hasn’t forgotten the way Maggie once charmed him at every turn—even with her controlling ways. This time, though, Coop refuses to let her seize the reins. What he doesn’t know is she plans to grab them anyway…and she’s got a secret she never shared.

REVIEW

The To-do List is a fine mixture of romance and suspense with nice plot.

I loved both Maggie and Cooper’s characters. Coop is unorganised and likes to have his office table or anything he uses messy whereas Maggie is very organised and can’t tolerate messy places.

Maggie and Coop were friends with feelings for eachother in their high school and they went their separate ways after Coop pushed her away. So The To-do List is a second chance romance as the two main characters meet again after a gap of 20 long years. Maggie and Coop’s love story is beautiful. It was sweet at times but at other times it was painful. This is my first second chance romance novel and after reading this book I know I would read more from this genre.

“Maggie admired Coop, breathing in the soft shadow of his cheeks and the glint in his eyes. He watched her and softened his lids ever so slightly, sending a warm tingle to her belly. Coop was sex on a platter.”

Mystery and the suspense surrounding the threats that Maggie received kept me guessing who can be behind these threats or what can be the reason. The reason these threats and attacks happened was something that I could have never imagined, even in my wildest dreams. The suspense was a very good addition to Maggie and Cooper’s story.

The To-do List is an enjoyable read that I believe would be loved by both mystery and romance lovers.

Mystery, Suspense, Thriller

Date Published:  March 2017

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

When English professor Lam Corso receives a death threat at work, he laughs it off. A liberal activist teaching at a small Southern conservative college, he’s used to stirring up controversy on campus. It’s just part of the give and take of life. Even when violently attacked, Lam is convinced it has to be a mistake. He can’t imagine anyone who would want to kill him for his beliefs.

When his home is broken into and his wife’s business vandalized, Lam is forced to face facts. The police can’t find a single lead. Lam’s wife—a passionate anti-gun crusader—is outraged when Lam brings a gun into the house for protection. Left to their own devices, Lam and Susan must examine their marriage, faith, and values in the face of a carefully targeted attack from an assailant spurred into action by a different set of beliefs.

What will it cost to survive?

Excerpt

In the silence immediately after Susan screamed, Simon’s high wail came from upstairs. Billy’s voice broke through, “Mom? What happened, Mom?” His voiced moved to the top of the stairs. “Mama, I’m scared. Where are you?” Simon was sobbing.

Susan grabbed the flashlight and scrambled to her feet. The darkness of the room pressed in on her, weighted with threat, the silence in the downstairs smothering her voice. She shined the flashlight toward the stairway, heading that way, and yelled, “Boys, can you see the light from the flashlight?”

She flicked the light around the room, and seeing nobody, she yelled again, with less panic this time, “Nothing to be afraid of, Billy. I’m sorry I scared you. You and Simon come on downstairs right now.” She shined the light on the stairway steps, fear crawling up her spine from the darkness behind her.

SYNOPSIS

The last time I saw my sister was the day before she vanished from my life. I’ve spent the last five years searching for her, clinging to the hope that one day I will find out what happened to her, but every lead has ended up at a dead end.

Until now.

He took me because he thinks I’m Her.

My instinct is to run. I want to fight my way out of there, but I can’t. This man is my only connection to my sister. I’ll do whatever it takes to uncover the truth. Even if it means falling right into the arms of a psychopath.

                          Excerpt

“You’re awake,” he comments. His voice is low and gravelly and it sends a shiver down my spine. There is something familiar about the way he looks at me, but I’ve never seen him before in my life. I’d remember him. I’m sure of it. All I can manage is a nod. As if his question needs a response anyway. He can see that I’m am, in fact, awake.

“Where am I?” I whisper.

My heart begins to pound as panic rushes through me. I pull my arms, hard, snapping the rope back to its full capacity, the coarse strands burning against my skin. I wince in pain. He clicks his tongue, his eyes narrowing as he watches me trying to fight my way free. He’s so calm, like he knows I have no hope, and is enjoying the show. The seriousness of the whole situation begins to sink in.

I have to get out of here. The anguish inside me spirals out of control and within minutes, I’m in full meltdown mode. Any hope I had of remaining calm and level headed has gone out the window. Dear God, I’m going to die.

God knows what this guy plans on doing to me. Everything about this situation screams serial rapist and probably murderer. You don’t have this kind of set up without some kind of serious personality problems. This guy probably spent his childhood strangling kittens and burning ants with a magnifying glass.

Am I his first, or were there other girls before me?

“Jesus, calm down. I’m not going to hurt you,” he mutters. His voice is gruff and low, and the furrow in his brow tells me he’s annoyed, like my reaction is frustrating him. How am I supposed to react to being locked in a basement? Am I supposed to believe that because you’re saying it? Of course you’re going to hurt me. Why else would I be here? I shake the cuffs on my wrists again, willing them off me, tears stinging my eyes.

“Calm down for god’s sake,” he growls again, running his hand through his thick, dark hair. Frustration laces his voice, making me nervous, because I get the feeling I don’t want to piss this guy off. But I already have. I’m sure of it.

He leans forward, swiftly unravelling the restraints from my wrists and ankles. I rub at the tender skin beneath them, and jump as his fingers brush past my own. For a moment I forget my own fears and I find myself drawn to him. There’s something about him that is almost intoxicating. It lasts less than a second before my defences kick back in.

Ted Bundy had charm too.

Chills: Book Review

CHILLS: A SHORT STORY COLLECTION

by Sahar Sabati

Genre: Suspense, Adult

Release Date: 17 October 2013

SYNOPSIS

The same people are impossibly spotted in two different places at once; a man considers murdering the husband of a woman he loves; while driving home very early in the morning, a driverless car appears out of the fog and follows two sisters home. Fear of the unknown, emotional intensity, and plain old creepiness will give you chills long after you have finished reading the seven stories in this collection.

REVIEW

True to its title, Chills actually gave me chills. All the stories quickened my heart rate and kept me at the edge of my seat.

Each time each story neared its climax, I used to grab whatever is near me to be prepared for the goosebumps that would cover my body and the chills that would run down my spine. And I have to admit it that none of the stories disappointed me in this, because all the stories had shivers running down my back. All the stories successfully scared me and had my heart on the verge of jumping out of its ribcage.

“Not knowing felt, after all, like the worse part of the situation. I slowly leaned down again, peered under the door – and made contact with a pair of startling green eyes.”

The excerpt above is the part of my favourite story from this collection. After reading this story, I am completely assured that these pair of eyes are definitely going to haunt me in my dreams.

All the stories of this collection are unique, and each one is different from the rest. These stories are not only different in the sense of storyline but also in the sense of genre, as some of the stories were supernatural while some were related to crime or criminals and some were mixture of both.

The main characters of each story are really well built and I could relate to them instantly even though some characters were way older than me.

If you’re a fan of scary suspense stories and if you believe that you can keep your heart in your ribcage safely while reading this book then this short story collection is definitely for you.
